Hi,
I upgraded to Spy sweeper 5.8 and had a lot of problems. There was an annoying pop-up every minute telling me how it had stopped bad sites opening. I managed to reduce this to the system tray , still a nuisance, and it stopped power point displays. Have sent a report to them but no answers yet. Managed to uninstall it and return to the ealier version without any more problems.
Is anyone else having problems with this program ?

I too have Spysweeper 5.8 and everything seems to be working find without any hitches, glitches, or problems. How long ago did you contact them??? I am sure that they will get back to you shortly. I don't know whether or not you called them or contacted them by email, but they usually get back within 24 to 48 hours.

Have a safe and Happy Labor Day!!!

I cannot support your remarks about Spy-Sweeper. I have just had the most strange reply.
This was my question to them.
I have just upgraded and downloaded version 5.8 and I find the shield alert method annoying. Either I can have a full window pop up or an alert in the bottom right hand corner of the system tray. Both methods are intrusive when I am in a program for I am continually being pestered by these alerts. If you are going to block then then that's OK but I would rather have the option to have this done silently and not see your blocking. I am unable to see how this can be done. Can you please give this option.
Norris Kenwright

and a follow up comment I made.

I am now finding that when I am viewing a power point show, the alert stops the show. This needs fixing fast.

and what was their comment after two days of deliberation.

We regret to inform you that it is not possible to disable the alert methodology.

Thanking you apologising for the inconvenience.

We believe that the provided response will resolve this case.

Do you believe that response !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time for a change guys.

First of all, I personally have not had any such experiences that you are referring to. The response that you received from them certainly is strange and I would call them directly and not deal with them over the internet through their website. I truly cannot say why they would have responded to you in that manner since I never have had any problems with them in the past. A phone call on your behalf would be more adventageous to you and dealing with a "live" person would be my very best choice. However, you have to make that decision whether or not you want to call them. They do have an 800 number.

I'm not familiar with Spy-sweeper at all. But it sounds to me, that what the program had learned in previous version, isn't used by the upgrade, so it "wants" to learn all over again. I agree, very annoying.

In Spybot S&D there's an option of using Teatimer, a kind of similar feature, it too needs to learn what you want to allow access or not, but I've experienced no start-over when it was upgraded to a newer version.

As for the answer you got, hmmm, such a reply would make me go look for another program. Apparently, Spy-sweeper support team doesn't really care about guiding and helping someone with a problem.

I will admit that I have had good service with Spy Sweeper over the years and have managed to sort out many problems. There has been quite a heavy load on RAM but the real shock was version 5.8 and the lack of support. I have reverted back to the earlier version and this is working OK. I will consider another program such as SkyWare Doctor when my subscription runs out for I do want an upto date program. I am also covered with Spybot, Ad-Aware and a very good Anti-Malware program that BenDavid recommended. Excellent Tojan killer.
The 800 number earlier mentioned. Does anyone have this please that is available in New Zealand?

I apologize that I did not notice that you do not live here in the US and therefore the 800 that they provide on their website might not apply to those who do not. I have another very good program that I really like as well; Spyware Terminator and it is also a free program and works very well. You might want to look into that program and see if you want to install it. I believe the program that you are referring to regarding the trojans is malewarebytes and I too have that installed.

I have not decided yet whether or not I will renew my Spysweeper program when it expires in at the end of December. I still have plenty of time to sort things out.

I have not upgraded to 5.8. I still have what is now called 5.7.2. What I am concerned about with this program is when I purchased Spysweeper on the recommendation of C8 it was just a spyware software. Now I am getting what is an antivirus plus spyware it says. Now I am in a quandry because I can't seem to find a place to shut down the antivirus part as I already use Avast . It lets me shut it off under options to run a quick sweep but if I want to run a full sweep it runs the antivirus too. What I'm worried about is that we are not to run 2 antivirus programs and I have always run my spysweeper in real time so now should I take it off from running all the time and only use as a spyware software., or am I reading something into this that isn't there. My subscription is good till February so I thought i might as well use it .I'm a little leery now with it ,seems to be getting bloated like so many oyher programs. Since this updated , which I'm not sure when have I had 2 antivirus running at the same time. I don't want to mess up my computer , and how protected can i be if they are fighting each other.

Many programs seem to be trying to be all things to all people and not sticking to what they do best. Norton & McAfee are soooooo large !!!. I tried Spy sweeper 5.8 but reverted back to 5.7.2 for it just did not suit me. I had a similar problem when I updated to AVG 8. It was very difficult to just get the anti virus part without all the other add-ons they tried to make me have. I spent a long time on the phone before it was finally sorted.
Now I even find AVG too top heavy and it takes an age to scan.

Hi Mary

I believe possibly the reason you have the Anti-Virus working on your Webroot SpySweeper is because you purchased it along with the spyware portion of the product. I have had SpySweeper for years now and yet I do Not have the AV portion on it. I only pay for the spyware and that's the only part that is highlighted and works at all. You may want to check into that. Of course if you do have the AV portion, it naturally will be working as an AV program as that's why it's on there. Anycase, I see no reason to be afraid of upgrading to the 6.8 version.

Webroot sent me an email saying that my subscription would run out for my spysweeper in February but if I wanted to upgrade it now they would just add the extra months to my subscription which I did not want to do as I did not want a multi software program again like Norton or McAfee. I really didn't pay too much attention after that till I started to get an error message from Webroot that it was having trouble scanning some of my email and that my firewall could be to blame. Well then when I went to run a scan it said antivirus off but it was on custom scan and when I went to full scan it said antivirus on. Well I emailed webroot and so far they're not giving me much. Here is what it sent me back :

I have had a pd. subscription for some years for spysweeper itself, which does not run out till Feb, 2009. Now it says webroot antivirus & spyware. My question is since i have this running in real time is it running the antivirus too. I"ve only found where I can shut down the antivirus but if I want to run a full scan it goes back to antivirus on. I had already been running Avast antivirus real time for many years too, am I now running 2 antvirus programs all the time?

My biggest problem is I don't want to be running 2 antivirus programs at the same time and i really shouldn't have it because I didn't request it or pay for it.

Here are two Free programs, that are as good or better than Spysweeper. I run both of these on four computers.

Most Security people will recommend these two programs.

1. SuperAntispyware Free Edition 4.20.1046

From SUPERAntiSpyware:

SUPERAntiSpyware, a next generation product, with its Multi-Dimensional Scanning and Process Interrogation Technology will detect spyware and remove over 1,000,000 pests such as Vundo, ZLob, SmitFraud, WinFixer, VirusRay, and VirusHeat. Repair broken Internet connections, desktops, registry editing, and task manager. The program provides complete and custom scanning of hard drives, removable drives, memory, registry, individual folders include trusting items and excluding folders for complete customization of scanning. Detect and remove spyware, adware, malware, Trojans, dialers, worms, keyloggers, and hijackers. Prevent potentially harmful software from installing or re-installing. First Chance Prevention examines over 50 critical points of your system each time your system starts up and shuts down to eliminate threats before they have a chance to infect and infiltrate your system. Our Direct Disk Access (DDA) technology sees rootkits others miss.

Version 4.20.1046 adds over 50 scanning engine enhancements to handle new threats.

2.Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.24

View program:From Malwarebytes:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start.

Version 1.27 adds heuristics for multiple new infections.

*Give them a try, you might just like the way they work..

Thanks Woodman! I definetely will be getting rid of spysweeper. They said because I did the new update to the program in January that I automatically got the antivirus as part of the update. I never saw that as part of it until I saw that it was trying to scan my email and got an error because of my firewall it said. My sister -in- law has this too but when she updated to the new version she still has the regular spysweeper. Now she is able to get the new version 5.8 she said and can decide wheter she wants the firewall and the antivirus as part of it. I got no choice when I did mine.

Hello all.

Well this morning the SpySweeper wanted to download their new program. I let it. It now also is an AV program as well as anti-spyware. I did NOT pay for this added program. I will wait now and see it it has any hick-ups when it scans. I have a set up of full scan one time a week and quik scan also one time in that week. I will report back on what my Vista allows here or not.
One thing tho....I have had my email shield turned off all along and it continues to be turned off, so I may not have any problems with this new program? We shall see. If you want to turn the Shield off on the scanning of your emails, simply go to - -'Shields', 'E-Mail Attachment Shield' (last item listed) and click on the wording 'E-Mail Attachments'. It will take you to that shield. Simply uncheck that option and it will turn email scanning off. Hopefully this will help you.

Hi Ron

Thank you for this information. I am going to copy/paste it and save it in a folder for possible future use. It's nice to know there is an alternative and these sound like two very thorough programs. Do you know if they are compatible with another product of like at the same time? I have XP Pro on my lap and have Panda on that as the Only security. That is not a free program. I think I would feel safer with 2 spyware programs as I have on my Vista, and one of these you list sound like a possibility for me.

Thanks, Sylvia

I am under the assumption you can open up the spysweeper all in one and maybe shut off the antivirus feature of this new offer so it does not run at startup and could cause so many conflicts where none existed before. So open up the program and see if there is such and disengage.
If you have spysweeper and the new all in one has been downloaded and installed and you are close to renewing the subscription then first I would make sure there is no auto renewal feature when you purchased this program on line. If you opened up an account after purchase you need to sign in to your account and check to make sure. Many programs offered do this and even though you might decide not to renew, the auto renewal feature will automatically do this and your bank account is charged and you will have to go through the process of getting your money back.
If you are satisfied with the spysweeper program and would like to incorporate all the security in one program then this will be the way to go. One of the benefits to having an all in one is your PC uses less memory and will perform better than if you had separate programs for spyware and virus protection. I am under the impression the firewall is a stand alone program.

Those were great suggestions by Ron about those free programs. I would ask everyone to go and download and install the malwarebytes anti-malware program to your desktop. Then I would follow the prompts and get the latest updates and then run a quick scan. Great program. After you have ran the first quick scan I would just leave it either in your programs or desktop or quick start.

I have a quick start for this program.. Same with the Superantispyware.. On my seniors forum, I have these and many, many more programs installed in the Computer Forums, for our members to just click on anyone they choose and run a scan..

Hi BenDavid
My SpySweeper ran this morning on it's scheduled scan. It was the Custom Scan which is the only type I have set up and I have all the Virus Sweeps and Shields turned off. It ran fine, found and removed 87 spyware. Since this morning the program has updated itself several times, as I have it set to do so hourly because I am on cable and the computer is on all the time.
Hopefully I will have no problems, however, If I do, you all will hear about it.
Still slightly holding breath in TN,
Sylvia

Sylvia, well alright my friend. Good to see all is well with the program and you are running the program and not vice versa.
As to any future problems you might incur, then by all means my friend, HOLLA-HOLLA. laugh.gif
