I went into the control panel and found that I had to click on the scanner which I did. But when I go onto Microsoft Word, I want to scan a document from my scanner and save it in my word documents and there is no hint anywhere that I can do this. I went into insert, all it gives me is picture or a file, I cannot say file because I cannot find out how to scan the information onto my computer. Hope I do not have to go through this when I have photos to download. Will soon see at Christmas.

A belated thought
Maybe I should get the printer disk out and re download the printer. I did not do this at the beginning because the computer recognized the printer.

The information has to go from the scanner to the programs, not from the program, Word or otherwise, to the scanner, if you want to set up the 'automatic' scan-to options.

I finally woke up and did some thinking, went onto the printers website, and found out some valuable information. Someone else had asked the same question, and I was able to print out the answer and voila no need to reinstall anything, and found out how to do the scanning. All info is coming from the Start button, still not used to Vista. Anyway according to the printers site, when Windows 7 is installed it will automatically update all drivers etc...
Thanks again for your valuable help

Windows 7, though, does take over software and drivers from the Vista OS when you do a direct upgrade, while from an XP system the upgrade has to be a fresh install, hence no integrating/adjusting drivers, software, programs etc. That does not mean that all 'old' programs will not work in Windows 7, but it does require you to look for the latest updates and upgrades to have the least compatibility issues, when you need to install peripheral drivers/software etc.
Now, if you don't mind - would you please give us a couple more details when you say that 'all info comes from the Start button.'. Certainly, you click on Start and it is possible to access certain programs and settings and so on from there via the Shortcuts Windows is providing. Therefore - when you clicked on START, which option did you choose next? Brother installation? Printers? If either or both were 'in there', then you must have installed all the necessary options for your printer on a previous occasion.

On the Brother website it told me to do the following:
1. Open the Clip Organizer: Start-All Programs-Microsoft Office-Microsoft Office tools-Microsoft Clip Organizer
2. Choose the file menu point to add clips to organizer and then click from scanner or camera.
3. In the insert picture from scanner or camera dialog box under device select the scanner
4. Click insert and save the scanned image in the directory of my choice.
To Insert the scanned image in the office 2007 applications
1. Open the office 2007 applications.
2. Click picture or clip art in the insert menu and choose the scanned image file.
I did the above and it worked. But then later on I went into the control panel and i did not see my printer there.
My blond hair is going to be turning gray or white by the time I am finished. This month and next is a crazy month for me. I make all my own Christmas cards. Plus I make 3 highly personalized calendars which 1 of them takes me over 60 hours in research to do, then another 70 hours to make since I am working with tiny graphics. Plus the balance of Christmas shopping and Winter cooking and christmas cooking. Mix all this up together with re teaching my mum how to use a computer. I finally finished removing all the old things that i did not need from the old laptop so that my husband can use it to play games on. Now I am waiting for Windows 7 to arrive.

PS
When i go to print something it shows my printer but it does not say anything about paperport SE which it did on my old laptop. I am getting confused, this is not good.

Nevertheless - what you read up on the Brother Website is certainly correct. Only, what you are doing when in MS office is to 'look' for a scanned object and then insert it from the scanner into Office, one by one. So, in effect you are receiving it FROM the scanner, not the scanner sending it TO MS office.
As far as I understood you wanted the scanner to automatically, by default, send scanned objects either to a certain folder or open them with a certain program...is that right? And this is what you need the printer directory for.
Let me ask you this, though: Would you consider letting me take a look into your computer? You would have to download and install a small program, which - when we both have signed in with the program at the same time and only with your permission via a shared password - would allow me to see what you are seeing and maybe help you figure out what is going on.
If you are interested in it, please send me a PM and we will take it from there.
Many times this extra step is needed in order to understand the situation a bit better and have therefore a higher chance in finding a resolution.

I do not use my scanner a lot. Only when I need to use it. But when I need to use it I usually scan the document and save it into my microsoft word program, because most people have microsoft word and can therefore read it with no problems.
I also have graphic programs on my system. Therefore when I need to use the scanner for a photograph I scan this to my graphic program, and work with it there. I have not tried to do this as of yet with Vista.
I would appreciate your help. I will be available tomorrow afternoon after 4 PM because my cleaning lady comes in tomorrow for a couple of hours and she will be a new one so I need to be handy for her in case she has any questions, plus she might not understand me because she could only be speaking French. The next time that I would be available is on Thursday, for most of the day.
