Hi,
I really love this site and would like your help. My husband is having problems with his laptop. He knows that I know nothing about computers.
But at least I know where to go. (2-U)
Here is the problem. He is trying to download a new Windows Xp Pro disc.
But when he tries he gets a error message:
An Error: has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing one of the components that windows needs to continue setup couldn't be installed. Then it tells him to make sure the disc is clean. (did that)
Then it say's error: Installation failed: D:\1386\asms.error message: do to error cyclic redundanry check
Fatal error : One of the componets that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Data Error cyclic redundancy check
I would really would like to show him, that while I may not know nothing about computers I know people that do.
Thanksso much foryour time and help.

Seems as though your cd is not being read and I suggest you clean the cd. Not just wipe it off. Clean it. This problem is an Hardware problem... don't Worry It's easy to solve : First : Check your Nap Cable. Second : Use only a CD-Rom or DVDrom Driver. not à CD burner. The most common cause for some of these errors is a bad/scratched CD. Other causes do include a failing CD-ROM drive. Here's a link for the ASMS error message: http://support.micro...com/kb/q311755/ Hope this helps and if not holla back.

If a) the disk does not have any obvious problems, as in dirt, scratches etc. and the drive is working alright (cross-check with another disk), there is the possibility that he needs a different XP Pro version
Question: How old is the laptop computer. Was XP Pro initially installed or is he upgrading. If the latter, which Windows version came with the laptop, not just XP, Home or Pro, but also if and so which Service Pack was included. Newer PCs and Laptops require XP versions with at least SP1 if not SP2 as part of the XP installation.

Please let us know if any our suggestions was helpful, if not - please give us some more details, so we can try to better pinpoint the problem. Thanks. :)

My husband ended up talking with a friend that has 3 computers for their buisness and they recommened a person that is very reasonable.
The young man came over and picked it up. He said it would be no problem to fix and he will have it back on Sunday! In the mean time I had told my husband I e-mailed his problem into your forum to get the answer. And when I came came on here tonight he could see you were ready to help.
I thank you very much and he asked me to Thank you as well.
